“Phelps comes from a broken home. According to the Baltimore Sun (Phelps is from Baltimore), Fred and Debbie separated for good in 1993, and the divorce was finalized the next year, when Michael was 9. Fred, a retired state trooper who lives in Linthicum, Md., hasn’t been a big part of Michael’s life since then; Michael has a closer relationship with longtime coach Bob Bowman.
Fred wasn’t at the Olympics and declined the Sun’s request for an interview, saying, “This is just about Michael. This is his glory, his time to shine.”
But Fred said he was watching. “I’m just on pins and needles every time he hits the water,” he said.”
